Perfect Fifth ("P5" for short) performs throughout the bay area. Since the group's formation in 2001, we have sung for engagements including the Pier 39 Tree lighting, Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, and Mark Morris' Hard Nut. The 2001-2002 season culminated with a seventeen-day tour of China with the UC Alumni Chorus http://ucac.net

In May 2004, we went on yet another tour with Alumni Chorus, this time to Finland, Latvia, Russia, and Estonia.

At the end of our 2007-2008 season, P5 was chosen to participate with Cal Performances and the UC Berkeley Department of Music , under the direction of UC Berkeley musicologist and professor Davitt Moroney, in presenting the American premiere of Alessandro Striggio's /Missa sopra Ecco sì beato giorno in 40 and 60 parts/, the largest known contrapuntal choral work in Western music.

P5 again colloborated with Professor Moroney in the Spring of 2009, this time with the UC Berkeley Baroque Ensemble on Henry Purcell's /Rejoice in the Lord Alway/.

Maybeck was selected as architect in the fall of 1909. The first services in the new structure were held in August, 191l. Clark will discuss the choice of architect--and the collaboration between the committee members, builders, and crafts people who produced this audacious landmark of modern eclecticism. Reception to follow.
Robert Judson Clark is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. He received his BA from the University of California. While still a student there he was drawn to Maybeck's Church. His books include The Arts and Crafts Movement in America 1876-1916. Robert serves on the Board of the Friends of First Church, and is their expert consultant on the architectural history of the Church. Currently he is writing books on architects in California and Germany, while continuing his research on the Church.

Who but Maybeck could so deftly conjure the antique echoes of Romanesque and Gothic traditions in creating a wholly original church with modern materials? Bosley explores Maybeck's innovative and confident method, focusing on the courageous use of modern building materials to express ancient ideals.

Edward R. Bosley is Director of the Gamble House in Pasadena, California - a landmark designed by Greene & Greene. He has a degree in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied first-hand the legacy of Bernard Maybeck. He has written the only book published on the Maybeck Church, First Church of Christ, Scientist Berkeley, published in l994. It is the standard reference on the Church. Recently he has written, along with Anne Mallek, a new book: A "New and Native" Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & Greene".

Up and Down, Inside Out: A New Dynamic of Religious Space. Marquand suggests that in interpreting the design of First Church Berkeley it is too easy to focus on Maybeck’s remarkable inventiveness. Seen in the context of other churches, he shows how the design is a new configuration of space, structure, and light that sets aside time-honored assumptions of heaven and earth. Reception to follow.

William Marquand, AIA is an architect, and is the Founder of the Maybeck Foundation. While obtaining his Masters in Architecture at Yale, he wrote the first academic thesis on the architecture of First Berkeley in an interdisciplinary program between the School of Architecture and the Divinity School. While Director of the Maybeck Foundation, he began the restoration effort for First Church Berkeley with an Historic Structure Report on the building. He currently serves on the Board of the Friends of First Church.
